Immigrant Organizations Call for a Statewide Strike on May 1st

A coalition of immigrant rights organizations of New Jersey are uniting efforts to participate in the national calling of “A Day Without an Immigrant” which will take place on Monday, May 1st , 2006. They will call for the community to participate in legislative actions throughout the state. 

“The National Day Without an Immigrant will be a demonstration of the economic importance that immigrants have in this country,” said Mahonrry Hidalgo, Chairman of the Latino Leadership Alliance’s Immigration Committee. “It is important to remind our congressman and senators the vital role their vote in Washington has on our community and New Jersey,” added Hidalgo.

The call of action for the strike will involve activities such as not going to work, no purchasing of products, or any business like transactions. It also calls upon students to participate the activities.

J. Carlos Avila, Co-Coordinator of Immigrant’s Public Advocacy Coalition of Trenton (ImmPACT) said, “It is important to be persistent in our fight for justice; we can not just be satisfied with accomplishments of rallies. We have worked in the grassroots mobilization arena now we are changing gears and working with the core political aspect,” he continued,” We will petition our congressmen who voted in favor of HR 4437 to revise their stance and when it is time to cast a vote they will do so conscious of the dependence our economy has on the thousands of immigrant residing in NJ. Here in New Jersey we will do our homework and change the negative congressional votes into favorable ones. No one should underestimate the immigrant movement of this state,” concludes Avila.

“Our communities understand that we are living perhaps the most important moments our lives.”, “HR 4437 has become the bomb that detonated this movement and has inspired our people to take action in a valiant manor’ “pointed out Julio Tavarez of the NJ Conference on Dominican Affairs, “It is not easy for an immigrant worker to take off from work, however, each day that goes by, more and more workers become involved with this movement and participate. They understand this will mark an important era in American history,” concluded Tavarez.

The particular actions that will take place in the three regions of the state on May 1st (i.e. contacting legislators, voter registration drives, community events, rallies, vigils, etc.) are to be announced.

Five of the twelve New Jersey Congressmen voted in favor of HR 4437.

Organizaciones de Inmigrantes hacen llamado a
Paro General en Nueva Jersey el 1ro. de Mayo

Una coalición de organizaciones de inmigrantes en New Jersey se une al llamado nacional de “Un día sin inmigrantes” a realizarse el día 1ero.de mayo del año en curso, y a su vez convoca a la comunidad a realizar acciones estatales de cabildeo legislativo durante esa fecha.

“El Día Nacional Sin Inmigrantes será una demostración económica de la importancia de los inmigrantes en este país”, declaró Mahonrry Hidalgo, Director del Comité de Inmigración de la Alianza de Liderazgo Latino de New Jersey. “A nivel estatal es además importante hacer énfasis en nuestros congresistas y senadores lo vital de su papel a la hora de tomar decisiones en Washington que puedan afectar la situación de nuestras comunidades en particular y del estado en general”, agregó Hidalgo.

El llamado al paro involucra como elemento principal el cese de actividades laborales ese día, así como evitar consumir, vender o realizar negocios de cualquier índole. También se llama a los estudiantes a ser parte de la acción. 

Carlos Avila, co-coordinador del grupo ImmPACT (Immigrants Public Advocacy Coalition of Trenton) dijo: “es importante ser persistentes en nuestra lucha, no debemos conformarnos con la euforia de las marchas. Hemos trabajado en el campo de movilizaciones populares y ahora nos concentraremos en el ámbito político.”, continuó, “Exigiremos a nuestros congresistas que votaron a favor del HR 4437 que recapaciten y que cuando les toque votar una vez más por una reforma migratoria lo hagan conscientes de los miles de inmigrantes que están beneficiando la economía de este estado. Aquí en Nueva Jersey vamos hacer nuestro deber y cambiar aquellos votos a votos favorables. No se debe subestimar el movimiento inmigrante de este estado”, concluyó Ávila.

“Nuestras comunidades han entendido que estamos atravesando los momentos más importantes de los últimos años.”, “ la propuesta legislativa H.R. 4437 fue el detonante de este movimiento que está inspirando a nuestra gente hacia actos de valentía y determinación”, señaló Julio Tavarez de la Conferencia de Asuntos Dominicanos de New Jersey, “no es sencillo para un trabajador inmigrante faltar al trabajo y sin embargo cada vez son más la voces que se unen a este llamado y cada vez más la seguridad de que este día marcará un precedente histórico en New Jersey y el país entero.” concluyó Tavarez.

Las acciones complementarias al “Día sin Inmigrante” organizadas por la Coalición se darán a conocer próximamente e involucrarán visitas legislativas, concentraciones, marchas, inscripción de votantes y eventos comunitarios en las tres regiones del estado.

Cinco de los doce congresistas del estado de New Jersey votaron a favor de la propuesta H.R. 4437.

Coalition for the First of May to Hold Press Conference to 
Announce Pro-Immigrant Events of May 1

The Coalition for the First of May will hold a press conference on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 12 p.m. (Noon) at the Statehouse Annex in Trenton to announce plans for New Jersey’s participation in a nationwide action known as “A Day without an Immigrant” scheduled for May 1.
The Coalition is urging immigrants and their supporters to take a variety of actions on May 1 including foregoing work, limiting purchases, the consumption of goods and financial transactions to symbolically illustrate what the United States of America would be like without an immigrant workforce.

During Wednesday’s press conference Coalition representatives will outline plans for the day, including events in dozens of towns and cities across New Jersey, including Camden, Paterson, Vineland, Glassboro, Atlantic City, Trenton, Freehold, Lakewood, Toms River, New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, Elizabeth, Passaic and other localities.

The Coalition consists of dozens of statewide and community organizations including the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey (LLANJ), Immigrants Public Advocacy Coalition of Trenton (ImmPACT), ACORN, C.A.T.A. (Farm Workers Support Committee), JUBILEE Immigration Task Force, Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF), New Jersey Immigrants Defense Committee, the Hispanic Alliance of Atlantic County (La Alianza Hispana del Condado Atlántico), Lazos América Unida, La Organización México-Americana and the Conference of Dominican Affairs of New Jersey (La Conferencia de Asuntos Dominicanos de New Jersey) among others.

La Coalición para el Primero de Mayo de New Jersey anuncia conferencia de prensa

La Coalición para el Primero de Mayo de New Jersey sostendrá una conferencia de prensa el próximo miércoles 26 de abril del 2006 a las 12:00 p.m. (mediodía) en el Anexo de la Casa de Gobernación (State House Annex) en la ciudad de Trenton. En días anteriores dicha coalición había hecho un llamado estatal a los inmigrantes al cese de labores durante el día primero de mayo, así como el no hacer compras, evitar el consumo y las transacciones financieras, todo enmarcado dentro del día de acción nacional conocido como “Un día sin inmigrantes”. 

Durante la rueda de prensa se ahondará en el tema del paro así como se detallarán las actividades y eventos que la Coalición realizará en más de una docena de ciudades alrededor del estado, desde Camden hasta Paterson, incluyendo Vineland, Glassboro, Atlantic City, Trenton, Freehold, Lakewood, Toms River, New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, Elizabeth, Passaic, y otras localidades.

La coalición está conformada por decenas de organizaciones, estatales y comunitarias entre las cuales se encuentran: La Alianza de Liderazgo Latino de New Jersey, ImmPACT ( Immigrants Public Advocacy Coalition of Trenton ), ACORN, C.A.T.A.
